Sanctuary Cove Challenge- Well done Broadwater

Published by under News Update

Well done Broadwater   !!!!!!!!

We ran it, and we WON it all  !!!!!!!!
We had 2 boats- the Masters "Barbarians" and the Prems and Masters combined "Broadwater Babies", and we showed off our new rescue boat.

The Barbarians (with a crew of 18)- led by PT and swept by Dion- took out 1st place from a field of 13 boats, winning for our Club an awesome trophy. The Babies had a crew of 16 (due to the flu hitting a lot of our paddlers), and finished a very respectable 8th.

Many commented that the 7.5 kms wasn’t as hard as they thought it would be- maybe they just weren’t putting in enough (ha!ha!)

The Dash for Cash over 300m, with a 180 degree turn at the 150m mark, made for spectacular racing, and great viewing.  Broadwater Barbarians won first place and $600, and the Babies came 3rd, winning $100. True to the spirit of the day, Paul donated our winnings back to the Cancer Council.

As you can all see from my previous email, it was a huge day, with Presentations at 1-30 p.m.

Today was all about having fun, mixing with other Clubs, and supporting a worthwhile charity.  Winning was a huge bonus.

We looked good, we did good, and we were seen by many.

TRAINING  IS  BACK  TO  TUESDAYS  AND  THURSDAYS  STARTING  THIS  WEEK. 5-30P.M.  ON THE WATER

COME & TRY DAY- SUNDAY 28TH JUNE- 10 A.M. TO 12 NOON. AFTER TRAINING.  FREE SAUSAGE SIZZLE.
EVERYONE IS TO BRING ONE NEW PERSON TO GIVE IT A GO.

TIN CAN BAY REGATTA- 11,12,13 JULY.  PLEASE ADVISE ASAP IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY IF YOU ARE COMING.  I AM FINALIZING ACCOMMODATION BY THIS FRIDAY, CANCELLING WHAT WE DON’T NEED, ETC.

Sanctuary Cove Prostate Challenge

Published by under News Update

To the Entire Qld Dragon Boat Community,

Congratulations to all at the Sanctuary Cove Prostate Cancer Fund Raising Race Day.

Today showcased  the true spirit of us dragon boaters to create an awesome day of racing, comaraderie and friendship.  For an event which was initially a total disorganizantional mess, to be so well run with efficiency and expertise, is a credit to all who assisted.

There were 13 boats racing, 4 rescue boats, plus 2 huge spectator boats, with perfect sunny, calm weather- all made for a fantastic spectacle.

Special accolades to Julie, Helen, Robyn and John- from Gold Coast Dragons- for their mathamatical genius and expertise as the Starting and Finishing judges of both the Marathon and the Dash for Cash races. Thanks to Blair, Lorrie and Norm for their experience and common sense. To all the competitors and helpers who assisted as boat loaders, handlers, etc- this made the Dash for Cash for a quick turnaround of races.  Of course, Paul did his "thing", as always, and took charge, but today was a real team effort from so many which prevented it from turning into a frustratingly frustrating day.

To see Clubs intermingling while having lunch, sharing paddlers to make full boats, all added to the day.  Huge accolades to Cooloola  who travelled down as a team to compete, and finished well.  No sinkings, no tip overs-just good, hard, fun racing.

Today raised approx $1,700 from team entry fess, plus the $1,000 Dash for Cash winnings which were donated back to the Cancer Council from the winning clubs Broadwater Dragons and Burleigh Fire Dragons (Plus the raffle takings).

I don’t think Sanctuary Cove will ever be the same again- after having almost 300 lycra cladded, wet suited paddlers parading through their streets and shops.

Well done to dragon boating in Queensland.  Events like this puts the fun back into competing.

Now let’s everyone take our travelling roadshow to Tin Can Bay in July, and do it all again.

Cancer Challenge, 15th June 2008

Published by under Events

To All,
Please read below the details for the Cancer Challenge on 15th June.
Karen

Hi all Clubs,
There is a fun day planned for the 15th June in aid of Prostate Cancer Research and the Cancer Council Queensland.
This is being funded by Sanctuary Cove and is to be an annual event.
The main paddle is from Paradise Point to  Sanctuary Cove.
Please do your best to attend and support this paddle.

We are following a similar format as Broadwater’s Nerang river marathon, however this is only 6km in length.
We will also be having some ‘out and back’ sprints after arriving at Sanctuary Cove.

FEE IS $5 PER PADDLER INCLUDING A FREE SAUSAGE SIZZLE.

CAR PARKING: AT SANCTUARY COVE PARKING LOT. BE THERE AT 8.30am

BUSSES PROVIDED TO TAKE PADDLERS TO PARADISE POINT – LEAVING AT 9.00am

BOATS TO BE DROPPED OFF AT PARADISE POINT AND TRAILERS TAKEN TO SANCTUARY COVE.

RACE STARTS AT 10.30am. WITH INTERVALS AT 30sec [to be confirmed].

WATER POLICE AND AIR SEA RESCUE WILL COVER THE BOATS.

ARRIVE AT SANCTUARY COVE. [sausage sizzle]

SPRINT RACES AT 12.30pm OUT AND BACK FOR CASH PRIZES APPROX. 350M LENGTH

PRESENTATIONS AT 1.30pm BY THE LORD MAYOR THE HONOURABLE RON CLARKE.

BOATS TO BE TOWED AROUND TO BOAT RAMP FOR PICK UP.

It would be good to see club’s provide their boats free of charge for this event. Standard thing though as far as damage is concerned.

QDBF EVENTS DIRECTOR, LORRIE LEDWELL is handling the organising for the day.
Please direct all registrations to lorrie@secretreef.com.au by the 8th June.

An update will be sent out next weekend.

Thank you all and hope you can come along and start this event off on it’s inaugural paddle.

Yours in dragon boating,

Blair Gamble
