Broadwater Dragons-Training at Paradise Point to START SATURDAY 1ST NOVEMBER, 2008

Published by under Uncategorized

A huge thank you to those of you who turned out for an info session at Paradise Point yesterday.

It was decided to train on Saturdays on a weekly basis at Paradise Point and see how this goes.  This may change, with more training sessions during the week added, if most are in agreeance.

Establishing a training arm of Broadwater Dragons is very exciting for our Club, and we will accommodate everyone as much as we are able to.  Everyone is welcome to come along- from 12 years to 60 plus years, male and female, the young, and the young at heart, and family groups.

START DATE- SATURDAY 1ST NOVEMBER

TIME- BE THERE BY 3-45 p.m. for a  4 p.m. START ( Training session for approx 1 hour)

PLACE- PARADISE POINT FORESHORE PARK (OPPOSITE ABALONE STREET)

COST- $5 PER PERSON.  THIS FEE ENABLES YOU TO TRAIN FOR 3 SESSIONS UNDER OUR INSURANCE COVER, BEFORE YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PAY THE FULL CLUB AND INSURANCE FEES OF $115 FOR THE 08-09 FINANCIAL YEAR.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING- Wear shorts, singlet or tight fitting t-shirt, and either joggers or bare feet.  Bring a water bottle, towel, change of clothes (as you may get a bit wet), and hat.  And VERY CHEAP SUNGLASSES.

Dragon boating is a water sport, you get wet, and may even on the very rare occassions, tip over.  Life jackets are provided for the non confident swimmers.

Please spread the word around your friends, workmates, gym buddies, who may be looking to try something different, and exciting, and FUN!!!!!!!!!

Please let me know if this DAY and TIME suits you.  And also advise by email or SMS if you will be coming on the 1st November.

A dragon boat seats 20, and we need at least 10 to get the boat into the water, and to get it moving.  Everyone is super keen to get this up and running, and numbers will build as word gets out, and the weather gets warmer.

Everyone who trains at Paradise Point and becomes a member of Broadwater Dragons will be included in all Broadwater Dragons’ social and competitive activities. We will be one club, one heart, one goal.

Please email or phone if you have any more questions.

Thank you.

A Review on the Club Crew World Championships in Macau

Published by under News Update,Regatta Results

To All Club Members,

A Review on the Club Crew World Championships in Macau- 28th July to 1st August, 2010.

What an awesome roller coaster ride of emotions the crew in Macau have been on!!!!!!!
38 competitors and 4 supporters- what a journey!!!!

Qualifying, travelling, competing on the world stage of dragon boating- has all been an amazing experience for all involved, with memories to cherish for a very long time.

From losing luggage that ended up in London- Talor’s and Koren’s- to the excitement of winning a Bronze medal in the 2000m Premier Mixed; with Andrew flying in and flying out for just three days; to Virginia racing her final race with Broadwater and the emotions shown were true and raw; to just the relief at the end in realization the competition was over. All the hard work, hours of commitment and dedication, training, fund raising just to ensure the team could make it, was a truly amazing effort for all involved. Learning how to deal with the extremely hot and humid weather was challenging, with cold showers a regular occurance all day long. Many of us drank up to 5 litres of water a day, just to hydrate and be able to compete.

Results-

66 Clubs from 15 Countries- USA, Canada, Russia, Germany, China, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Macau, Jamaica, Phillipines, Czechoslovakia, Australia.

115 crews = approx 3660 competitors

Broadwater Dragons was the only Australian Premier Womens team in the standard boat (22 crew).

Premier Mixed- 2000m- 17 crews competed- BRONZE. Time-9.09.48 (Winner-Canadian team-8.44.88)
500m- 21 crews- finished 9th. Time-2.04.72 (Winner-Pacific Dragons-Sydney-1.59.72)
200m- 20 crews- finished 11th. Time- 50.02 (Winner-Canadian team-46.59)

Premier Women- 2000m-14 crews-finished 7th. Time- 9.54.29 (Winner- Chinese team-9.01.75)
500m- 16 crews-finished 6th. Time-2.11.48 (Winner-Chinese team-2.00.49)
200m-15 crews-finished 8th. Time-53.55 (Winner-Chinese team 47.37)

The Chinese teams in the Premier Women were awesome, with their times surpassing many of the open and mixed times. The Officials commented that this was the strongest Premier Womens field they have ever seen in the 14 years of the CCWC’s.

Many of the Chinese and Canadian clubs have paid coaches, and paid athletes, either by their governments, or by their Clubs.

The comaradiery between the many different clubs and competitiors was inspiring, with many of us finding out so many different aspects to other clubs’ training schedules, techniques, club admin, etc.

THANK YOU TO ALL BROADWATER PADDLERS, FAMILY AND SUPPORTERS

A huge thank you to all our Broadwater paddlers, families and supporters who have assisted, pushed, trained and fundraised with the Macau crew. Without your help, the task of doing it all alone would have been impossible. Broadwater Dragons gained the respect of all international clubs due to our results, and they all now know who we are. Many of us swapped our race shirts, as they were in great demand by other clubs.

The Macau crew greatly appreciates all that you have all done for us, with Broadwater Dragons as a Club being the true beneficiaries of everyone’s efforts.

Congratulations and well done to everyone.

Thank you.

******** UPDATE ON THE NIFSAN & EMERALD LAKES PROPOSAL ***********
Emerald Lakes and Nifsan have approached Broadwater Dragons to set up a permanent base

shed, toilets and fenced compound area for the boats is being developed, with the final budget
to be approved by Nifsan in Japan. We were told more information will be forthcoming by

The club has trained on the lake, with the area Nifsan will allocate to the club explained to all
who were present. No final decision will be made till all members are advised of the
developments, and the committee is in full agreeance with all that the Club is being offered.
This is a very exciting time for our Club, as securing a long term permanent training and
storage facility has always been a top priority.

EMERALD LAKES COMMUNITY/CORPORATE DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

Published by under Events,News Update

EMERALD  LAKES COMMUNITY/CORPORATE  DRAGON  BOAT  FESTIVAL
SUNDAY 18TH OCTOBER, 2009

The Broadwater Dragons Paddling Club will be hosting their inaugural Emerald Lakes Community/Corporate Dragon Boat Festival on Sunday 18th October, 2009.

Broadwater Dragons Paddling Club formed in 2001, and has been showcasing the sport of dragon boating to the wider community through these community, corporate and social dragon boat festivals since 2003.

Nifsan and the Emerald Lakes community are proudly supporting this event, which Broadwater Dragons plans to become an annual event on the lake.

The Corporate/Community dragon boat festivals are all about having fun, promoting team spirit and participation as well as introducing the wider community to the sport of dragon boating.

Dragon boating is a sport for people of all ages, of differing abilities, and a sport the entire family can enjoy together- from the juniors to the grand parents. Broadwater Dragons promotes fitness, fun and friendship, with the opportunities to travel nationally and internationally to competitions.

The March 2009 Paradise Point Dragon Boat Festival hosted by Broadwater Dragons was another of our hugely successful regattas. Fantastic people with fantastic weather, with awesome attitude. Twenty teams resulting in over 450 competitors, and many more spectators. The racing was friendly, fast and furious, with the Grand Final a very close finish.

To see so many paddlers from such diversified business and backgrounds all having such a great day was hugely rewarding for our Club. The Finals
saw eighty competitors on the water simultaneously, all doing the exact same physical action- a statistic that only dragon boating can boast.

Broadwater Dragons have just returned from the Australian National Championships in April, winning two silver medals and bronze medal. From 40 clubs competing at the Nationals, Broadwater Dragons finished 4th overall, making Broadwater the 4th strongest Club in Australia. Broadwater Dragons qualified to compete at the World Club Crew Championships in Penang in 2008, and finished 7th from a field of 27 teams in the 2000m race.

As Broadwater Dragons continues to grow and recruit new members of all ages, and abilities, it’s ethos of “having fun while getting fit” will never be forgotten. With fun and friendship comes a strong desire to perform to the best of your ability.
