Newsletter – July 09

Published by under News Update

From the President & Coach,
Broadwater Dragons has been to Tin Can Bay, had fun, socialised and relaxed, all in the spirit
of dragon boating in our “off” season, with many members also enjoying some much needed
time out to support their families, attend kid’s sports, and generally do their home
maintenance and mow lawns.

Now the fun begins, with our first “Sports” regatta- Tewaka’s- on at Varsity Lakes on Sunday
Aug 23rd. We need for you all to get back to training, as we have a reputation to uphold, to
gain in strength and experience, and to start our plan to qualify for Macau in 2010.

commitment for the forthcoming season.

club. Be involved, see how the club works, and how it can continue to grow.
See you on the Water,

Paul

******** UPDATE ON THE NIFSAN & EMERALD LAKES PROPOSAL ***********
Emerald Lakes and Nifsan have approached Broadwater Dragons to set up a permanent base
on Emerald Lakes, so as to fulfil their planning requirements to the Emerald Lakes community
in establishing and providing water sport activities on the lake.

Nifsan advised the Club on Tuesday 28th July that plans for a clubhouse/equipment storage
shed, toilets and fenced compound area for the boats is being developed, with the final budget
to be approved by Nifsan in Japan. We were told more information will be forthcoming by
Wednesday 5th August.

The club has trained on the lake, with the area Nifsan will allocate to the club explained to all
who were present. No final decision will be made till all members are advised of the
developments, and the committee is in full agreeance with all that the Club is being offered.
This is a very exciting time for our Club, as securing a long term permanent training and
storage facility has always been a top priority.

NEW MEMBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME
The Club always welcomes new and beginner paddlers of all ages, and now is the perfect time to start, to be
ready for the 09-10 season. Encourage anyone who is interested that NOW is the RIGHT time, and please
explain that for insurance purposes, there is a fee of $5 which covers their first 3 training sessions, which
must be paid at their first session.
The Club provides the boats, paddles, expert coaches and trainers, and a great fun and social life for all.

Broadwater Dragons is holding our bi annual and very successful community and corporate
dragon boat festival. This is our major fund raising event for the Club, and ALL club members

The festival is being held on Emerald Lakes in Carrara and is proudly supported by Nifsan and
the Emerald Lakes community. A beautiful calm lake, manicured parklands, ample parking- all
creates the perfect atmosphere for a fun, social day.

If you are interested in entering a team, or know of a workplace which is looking for something
different for their staff picnics, then this event is ideal. Team entry fee is $300 and covers
insurance, one training session prior to event and all equipment is supplied.

The Corporate/Community dragon boat festivals are all about having fun, promoting team spirit and
participation as well as introducing the wider community to the sport of dragon boating.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS & NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS- 2010
The State Championship date has yet to be decided. But they will definitely be in
Caloundra at Stockland Park.

In 2009, with two nights accommodation and race entry fee, and fund raising-
Cost per paddler-$85-00 Once the date is announced, accommodation will be booked at Grand Pacific Breakfree Resort
in Caloundra for all paddlers.

AUSDBF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS- ADELAIDE- 2010

Thursday 22st April, 2010- State vs State Championships
Fri- 23rd April to Sun- 25th April 2010- Club vs Club National Championships

All paddlers need to arrive in Adelaide by 2-30 p.m. on Wednesday 21st April 2010 for a
training session at 3-30 p.m.
Accommodation is booked at Quest on Sturt- fully self contained two storey apartments.
See www.questonsturt.com.au

We all need to start budgetting for the Nationals next year, and also to plan for the State
Championships in March in Caloundra. The Club will be fundraising to assist all paddlers with
their expenses-through sausage sizzles, etc, and if anyone has any fund raising ideas, please
see Sylvia, or any committee member.

Air fares from the Gold Coast to Adelaide are very inexpensive right now, but please be aware
teams will not be selected till early 2010. If you book now and do not make a team, you are
very welcome to come as a team manager, supporter, etc. Or you can transfer your flight to
another time to suit for a small fee.

The Club would like to enter Premiers, Masters, and
Juniors, and it is up to everyone to actively encourage and recruit on behalf of the Club to
achieve this.
