To All Club members,

Published by under News Update

To All Club members,

The Penang crew has returned, all fired up and excited for the on coming season.  An awesome experience for all, gaining invaluable insight into our fantastic sport, and to mix it with the best of the World was incredible.

Our Premier Mixed team came 7th from a field of 27 crews in the 2000m race, with Sydney’s Pacific Dragons 6th, and Brisbane River Dragons 8th.
In the 200m, we made the Plate Final, and came 18th from a field of 33 crews. (Major Final, Minor Final, Plate Final)
In the 500m, we again made the Plate Final, and came 16th from a field of 33 crews.

Over 4000 competitors representing 110 different clubs from 22 countries around the world contested the Club Crew World Championships, which makes this a huge event.

Our focus and determination throughout the entire event was very intense. The energy, enthusiasm and knowledge we all gained from this regatta will now be brought back to our Club- Broadwater Dragons- which can only make it stronger.

Special thanks to Karen for her organizational skills in putting the majority of this trip together.  Micah’s wealth of experience in the travel industry was a huge asset, as was his advice on the bartering methods we used in Kuala Lumpur. Thank you to Micah for organizing bus transfers in KL with our very chatty tour guide- Solomon.

The team did organized training sessions morning and afternoons while we were in KL and Penang, to keep everyone supple, stretched and to acclimatise to the hot, humid conditions. Thank you to Corey, Micah and Odette, and PT for running these sessions.

Our video specialists- Bronwyn (James’ wife) and Juanita (Shane’s wife)- did a fantastic job of catching all our warm ups, races, etc, as proof we were there.  Thank you to our supporters.

To James- a huge thank you for your support, patience and strength in being our Team’s “Bag Man”, carrying our water bottles, tags, extra clothes, hats, etc.  You are greatly appreciated by all of us.

Special mention for  the teams’ specialized DJ- Brett Nugent- who kept the music pumping for 2  nights at the end of our competition.  Thank you for keeping us entertained.

And to the Penag crew- to the entire 25 of Broadwater Dragons who made me very proud to be your coach.  “Broadwater” was there, we qualified to be there, and we earned the respect of others by doing so well.  Thank you to you all.

Now we have returned, a new season starts, with our next focus  the State Championships in March 2009, with the Australian National Championships in May 2009 in Caloundra, Queensland.

BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!

Day trip to Bundaberg 6 July

Published by under News Update

From: Susan Doel
To: QDBF Members

Hi everyone

This may be another call asking for paddlers to do something, but it is aimed at individuals not at clubs so I am sincerely hoping that you will pass this message on to your members.

Bundy Dragons is a very new club that is in the process of getting set up and running.

They are holdling a Come Try on 6 July, and QDBF are supporting this by taking up some paddlers to work with their very new team and giving members of the public a dragon boat experience.

Programme for the day is 11 am – 12 pm Training with Bundy Dragons, 12 pm – 2 pm Come Try and Sausage Sizzle.

The venue is the Bundaberg Sailing Club ie good facilites and lovely setting.

So we are looking for paddlers happy to have a day out at Bundaberg, all costs funded by the Development Grant. Going up on Saturday could be an option if people are interested. They tell me it is still summer in Bundaberg.

Please let me know if you are interested as soon as possible, so that we can get transport arranged.

Regards

QDBF are re newing completely the QDBF website

Published by under News Update

Hi All,

QDBF are re newing completely the QDBF website. All clubs have been asked to update their Club profile.

Please read the below profile, make any suggestions you like re wording, etc, so I can send it to QDBF for inclusion. I am open to any ideas, change, etc. This is just my effort ( very unexperienced).

From their humble beginning in 2001, Broadwater Dragons Paddling Club has developed into one of the strongest three Clubs in Queensland. Through dedication and commitment of all Club members, Broadwater Dragons won Gold and two Bronze medals at the Queensland State Championships in March 2008, of which they are very proud.
Broadwater Dragons was founded in 2001 by eight committed, very enthusiastic and experienced paddlers who shared a common goal of forming a club on friendship, comradiery with a deep desire to compete at the highest level.
Many of Broadwater Dragons’ current members have State, National and International experiences, with some having travelled to all National Championships since 2001; raced in South Africa, China and Canada.
As Broadwater Dragons continues to grow and recruit new members of all ages, it’s ethos of “having fun while getting fit” will never be forgotten. With fun and friendship comes a strong desire to perform to the best of your ability.
Broadwater Dragons trains and paddles on the Nerang River from the Crowne Plaza Royal Pines Resort, Benowa, Gold Coast, Queensland.

Currumblin Regatta

Published by under News Update

Hi Crew,
Thank you for a fantastic day of fun, competition and hard racing. Our crew of 35- 31 adults and 4 juniors- paddled with heart to prove that we are a force in the top 3 clubs in mens, womens, and mixed. For the many of you who had to work- you would have been so proud of our crew.

Special mention to Lachlan, Amanda, Juanita, Laelani, Wendi, Bronny, Connor, and Taylor who all raced in their first ever regatta- a fast and fierce 200m- and to David who has made a return after a year off. Well done and very impressive.

All teams made the Finals- with Broadwater Blue our development team of 15 paddlers making the Minor Final (finished 6th on points from 12 teams entered) and finished 4th, and the Womens, Open and Mixed all placing 3rd in the Major Finals. An awesome result, plus a huge learning experience for all.

Attached are a few pics of the some of the Premier Mixed Crew- and a few of our Kiwi girls.

Now to focus on strength and fitness with out of boat work plus training on water. It is only the combination of both which will make us all stronger and better paddlers.

Bundaberg Trip – Regional Squad/Sweep Acreditation

Published by under News Update

HI Paddlers – just some insight into some of the events QDBF members go to ………..

Bundaberg Trip – Regional Squad/Sweep Acreditation

I recently visited Bundaberg/Bucca and the regional crews involved from Bundaberg, 1770, Cooloola, Hervey Bay & Rockhampton. Saturday afternoon saw us with over 30 potential Qld regional paddlers for the Central region. It was great to see their enthusiam in our effort to send our first central regional team to participate for Qld at Nationals in April 2012. I was amazed at the attitude and resultas from all those that tested and I am very excited to hopefully see this crew reprsenting as part of the Qld squad next year.

Sunday saw the kick off of the 3rd regatta of the Wide Bay series which was held out at the Rowing & Accomodation Centre at Bucca Weir. What a great venue even though its off the beaten track – great place to even consider holding State Titles in the future.

Along with the sports teams and pinkies, 3 corporate teams also competed – Police, Fieries and the Defense Force. All participants had a enjoyable day and some of us even came home with heat stroke and sunburn due to the glorious weather that Bundaberg put out for us. As the host club, Bundaberg pulled out all stops and were even able to get us on Channel 7 news, promoting QDBF and Dragonboating in that region and also brought the cultural side into it with the lion dancing……

My main aim during my time in Bundaberg was to get the Central Regional squad off the ground, assisting them with their testing and sweep acreditation for a few provisional sweeps – one from bundy and the other from 1770.

In my eyes, 1770 were a stand out. They have obviously invested alot of time and effort into their training sessions which clearly stood out on the Sunday with them going home as the regatta winners.

Congratulations to all those central regional paddlers and I look forward to catching up with all regional clubs early next year…..

Jo

NEWSLETTER – JUNE 2008

Published by under News Update

A HUGE THANK YOU
To all the paddlers, friends, and partners and children who have helped Broadwater with their fundraising efforts in the past few months.
By volunteering our time -The Supersprint Triathlon raised $675, and the two Bunnings Sausage Sizzles raised $2200- for our Club.
A huge effort, Thank you and well done to all who assisted.
Our next Bunnings Sausage Sizzle is in August, at Nerang.

PRESENTATION NIGHT
A great night out at the Royal Pines Resort saw all the guys and gals dressed in their splendor, to celebrate the end of the 07-08 season.

Congratulations to Phil King for being awarded the “Club Person of the Year”, for his never ending assistance with the boats, trailers, sweeping, fund raising, and for being just a really great Club person. Jono and Dion were each awarded the Coaches Trophy, for their outstanding achievements at State, National and World levels in the 07-08 season.

COMING EVENTS-

“ON Q” CORPORATE COME & TRY SOCIAL DAY- SUNDAY 29TH JUNE
Cheryl and her workmates at ON Q are having a regional social get together at Emerald Lakes on Sunday 29th June, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. using our dragon boats for a fun, team building day of social competition. Approx 40 to 60 are expected to attend. We need 4 of our paddlers to assist on the day, with Paul, Phil and Karen sweeping. Please let Karen know if you can assist. (0407 445 774).

TIN CAN BAY WEEKEND – Sat/Sun-19th/20th July-
“The Sleepy Lagoon Hotel Regatta” will be raced on Sunday 20th July- 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Travel time to Tin Can Bay- 3 ½ hours.

Accommodation is booked at the Sleepy Lagoon Cabins (same as previous years), @ $30 per head, for both Friday & Saturday nights. Race entry fee is $10 per person for the day’s racing.

This is a fantastic weekend where all clubs get to socialize, party, have a great night out, then compete on the Sunday in a friendly regatta over 200m racing.

Please email Karen or text on 0407 445 774 or see her at training THIS WEEK if you are going as numbers must be finalized by this weekend for rooms, team entry, etc. Also add on any family members, friends, etc who will be keen to tag along. Car pooling will be arranged to keep travel costs down.

The team travelling to Penang will not be going to Tin Can Bay this year, as some of these paddlers cannot afford to go, others are spending their weekend at home with their family before departing, and the team needs to have a full on training session 2 weeks out from the Club Crew World Championships.

CLUB CREW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS- PENANG
1st, 2nd & 3rd August
Broadwater Dragons qualified for this Championship by being placed 3rd in Australia at the Nationals in April in Perth, 08. Twenty five paddlers and two supporters are travelling to Penang to compete, leaving on Saturday 26th July, returning 5th August.
The Club wishes all good luck, “Paddle with Heart”, make Broadwater proud.

NEW EQUIPMENT PURCHASED
A 3rd Champion Boat, with delivery in 2 to 3 months time, has been ordered. A double decker 2 boat trailer has also been approved, with John and Beau looking into the costings, quotes, etc.

An Equipment Storage Trailer for all the Club’s equipment-tents, heads, tails, drums, paddles has been approved for purchase, using the Gold Coast City Council Equipment Grant of $3,500 approved to the Club in May. This will make it much easier for storing and transporting our Club’s equipment, as everything will always be in this one trailer.

NEW RACE UNIFORMS
After almost 7 years of wearing our race singlet in its current design, the committee has decided on a change. New sun smart t-shirt style race shirts have been designed and ordered for the start of the 08-09 season. Cost will be approx $47 each, and all paddlers will be required to purchase their own race shirt prior to Tewaka’s regatta in August. New dress shirts are also being made (cost approx $30). Sports bags (orange and blue) can also be purchased, with our dragon logo-$35 each.

CORPORATE REGATTA- OCTOBER 5TH –SUNDAY- AT PARADISE POINT.
Please keep this day available, as all Club Members will be needed to make this a fantastic, well run, and successful event.

Published by under News Update

Here we are already into the 2nd month of 2012!  Seems like a good time to bring you all up to speed with what’s happening in “Broadwater Land”

The car park at Royal Pines is currently being used for the Ladies Masters Golf & we do not have access for Sunday morning training therefore….

NEW REGATTA DATE FOR BROADWATER – LOCK IT IN !!!!

SUNDAY 5th FEBRUARY – We had to postpone our club regatta due to the heavy rain. Emerald Lakes Management have always been extremely supportive of our club but the condition of the grassed areas is far too boggy to allow some 300 people, tents & cars to use the area. The new date for the regatta is now SATURDAY 3rd MARCH which will enable all clubs to continue their participation at our regatta and for their State team members to attend the last 2 training sessions on 12th Feb & 4th March.

BROADWATER DRAGON LOGO STICKERS

Selling like hotcakes!!!! Get yours before it’s too late……$4 each or 3 for $10. Catch Di for your stickers……

RACE SHIRTS, DRESS SHIRTS, CLUB CAPS

Stocks are running low & we are running out of time if we need to order more to be here for the State Titles on 17 & 18 March. If you are paddling at the States & Nationals & need to buy your club uniform PLEASE contact Annie our uniform convenor. Don’t delay……

PADDLER INFORMATION

Please direct all paddling, training, membership, diet enquiries to a committee member or a coach.

NEW BOAT

We took delivery of the new club boat on Sunday 8 January 2012 – straight off the boat from China!!!!  Thanks goes to John, Stuart, Stan , Nick  & Andrew who  left the coast in the wee hours of the morning to travel to Brisbane & assist 9 other clubs to unload their boats  before returning with ours!!! Take a look at our next training session at Royal Pines. The boat is being prepared for use with marine grade screws, paints, lacquers & varnish. All timber on the boat is raw when it arrives, standard practice. Huge thanks again go out to John, Stuart & Stan who spend many hours every Saturday working on these boats so we can paddle. If anyone has a yard with access to power that can be used to work on the boats we would love to hear from you.

THE OLD RED BOAT

Has moved on to greener pastures. The red boat is now in Brisbane being restored for the use of the young adults who are members of TS Diamantina Cadet Unit. Our club was approached by the cadet unit asking if we had a boat we could donate. We are promised photos of the boat once finished….take a look at 3 of our paddlers Nick, Irene & Jayne who were with the club when it was bought in 2003.

MOST IMPORTANTLY…….

CHICKS AT THE FLICKS IS ON AGAIN……

I am chasing group details for next WEDNESDAY night 8th February at 6pm: wine…dine…and maybe win a prize or 6! For those that haven’t had the experience before we all meet in the foyer of Birch Carroll & Coyle Pacific Fair, sort out our payment, enjoy wine tasting & hot & cold canapés then at 7pm we head in to watch “THE VOW” Looks like a seriously chick flick but we love the boys to join us!!!! Last time we went there were 18 of us & we won 6 prizes!! YOU MUST CONFIRM YOU ARE ATTENDING WITH ME AS I NEED TO BOOK THE SEATS.

Phew!!! Hope I haven’t missed anything!!

Cheers!
