The 2010 AusDBF National Championships- Adelaide, SA.
The Largest Nationals ever- 47 Clubs, 1245 competitors on State vs State Day, 1970 competitors on Club Days, 205 races over 4 days.
Clubs from- Qld-7, NSW-20, SA-6, ACT-7, Vic-1, WA-4, NT-1, Tas-1.
This is the first ever Australian Championships where ALL States and Territories are represented.
What an awesome three days of competition for Broadwater Dragons!!!!!!
Our Club had 44 paddlers attend these Nationals, with three from Coolangatta Mt Warning, and 10 Juniors from Redcliffe, Lakers and Tewaka joining our own Juniors to make a 20′s crew which raced in the Junior Mixed and Junior Open.
Thank you to Dougal, Jacqui and Shauna- we know you have all gained enormously from this experience, and will share your enthusiasm and knowledge with your fellow Club members at Mt Warning.
The competition was really tough in all divisions, with 34 teams in the Premier Mixed category, 19 teams in the Premier Womens, 21 teams in the Premier Open, 7 in the Junior Mixed, and 4 in the Junior Open.
Our Premier Mixed, Open and Women’s teams had paddlers ranging in age from Juniors to Grand Masters, and our results reflect all our hard work, dedication and commitment to our Club. Compared to other top clubs, who had full teams of Premier aged paddlers, we can feel very proud of all of our performances and achievements.
Broadwater is a true family club, which can boast several mother/daughter, father/son family units competing in the same crew.
Congratulations to Georgina and Hannah, Helen and Carly, Virginia and Chelsea- all medalled in the 500m and 2000m finals; to Richard, Shannon and Ben; Paul, Karen and Dion; Kerry, Virginia and Chelsea- who all competed together in the Open races at some stage throughout the 3 days of racing. Well done.
Our results show the guts and determination from all, from the youthfulness to the vastly experienced. We all fed from one another’s sheer will to do our best and beyond.
Congratulations to our 22 Club paddlers who competed on Thursday on State vs State day. Many won medals-including Gold, Silver and Bronze.
Thank you to Micah, Beau and Sylvia- who assisted with the team selections and seat placings, and in the warm ups. These Nationals are truly a team effort, and with such experienced and committed assistants, a coach’s job is made that much easier.
To our Juniors- WOW!!!!!! How awesome, and inspiring are you all!!!!!! You all showed pure guts and determination, and your “Steven Bradbury” silver medal in the 200m Junior Mixed was incredible to watch. Coming 4th in the Final of 6 boats, Dion held on tight to sweep through a powerful wind gust, while the 2nd and 3rd boats collided, and you powered home for a silver medal.
Our commiserations to Corey, who due to a really bad bout of the flu, missed the Nationals altogether. Corey cheered us on from his sick bed on the Gold Coast, and we kept him posted on all our results. Thank you for your positive comments. Dion, Koren and David had their Tiger flight cancelled altogether, so Koren and David arrived via Melbourne the next daywith Jetstar (I think), and Dion travelled later with Virgin. A very expensive trip, but our medals were full reward for their efforts. Thank you.
Many of you are new to the sport, but display energy, enthusiasm, sheer determination, and GUTS. Thank you to All of our club members- especially to those who did not travel to Adelaide, but pushed us all so hard at training, to allow us to race and train in a highly competitive atmosphere.
To all of the Broadwater Dragons paddlers, be proud of who we are, and what we have achieved. For those who are not aware of our Club’s history, Broadwater was formed in 2001, competed at our first Nationals on the Gold Coats in 2002.
